The Hochland Dog Club was founded in 1977 by a group of dedicated individuals with the vision of promoting, the care, breeding and showing of pure bred dogs in Namibia. With 2012 being the Club’s 35th birthday this is a vision which remains with the Club committee and members till this day.
The Club is affiliated with the Kennel Union of Southern Africa (KUSA) and is currently the only dog club in Namibia dedicated to breed showing.
We currently hold four shows per annum and being affiliated to KUSA all shows are held under the rules and regulations of this governing body.
Two of our shows, in March and October of each year, are known as Open Shows where all pure bred dogs may be shown irrespective of whether they are registered with KUSA or not.
Our other two show are held in July and are what is known as Championship shows, meaning these are shows were dogs can obtain points towards achieving their championship status.
Rules and regulations and the ins and outs of showing can be a bit of a minefield for the beginner but the Committee are always on hand to assist wherever they can.
All judges have to be qualified according to the rules of KUSA and as there are no qualified judges within the borders of Namibia all our judges come from South Africa, generally Cape Town and/or Johannesburg.
At our Open Shows are have special classes for children and junior handlers, this encourages the youngsters to get involved in the care of their dogs. While the dogs in these classes must be pure bred the dog itself is not judged but rather how the handler presents the dog to the judge and how well they know the rules of showing and what is expected of them in the ring.
